CertainTeed Roofing in Venice, CA | Huntington Beach Roofers
We provide independent CertainTeed roofing service across Venice, from the walk streets to the canal blocks. Here’s the one thing that makes our work here different: in Venice, we judge every CertainTeed roof by its flashings and fasteners first, because the salt air off the Pacific corrodes hardware years before the shingle field shows wear. That’s the local reality. We’re Huntington Beach Roofers, led by Neil Stratton, and we install and repair CertainTeed Landmark, Presidential Shake, Grand Manor, Carriage House, and Flintlastic systems across 90291 and 90294. Call (833) 467-4901 for a free estimate.
Why Venice Residents Choose Us for CertainTeed Service
CertainTeed makes a genuinely wide product range, from the workhorse Landmark architectural shingle to the Presidential Shake and T/L lines, the Grand Manor and Carriage House luxury profiles, and Flintlastic modified bitumen for low-slope assemblies. We work with all of them. But here’s the thing: knowing the product line isn’t enough on the Westside. You have to know what the ocean does to those products.
Neil grew up in Bolsa Chica and learned the trade at Golden West College’s construction technology program. Then he spent over two decades on roofs from the South Bay to the OC coastline. That means we’ve seen what salt-laden marine air, constant onshore wind, and wind-driven sand do to shingles, drip edge, vent boots, and nails. We’re an independent CertainTeed service provider, not factory-authorized, so our recommendations follow CertainTeed’s published installation requirements plus what actually holds up on a roof three blocks from the surf. We spec and repair accordingly.
Because we also carry GAF, Owens Corning, IKO, Atlas, Tamko, and Boral, we don’t have to force a CertainTeed product where another material makes more sense. Seven brands. One contractor. If your CertainTeed Landmark roof is sound but the flashings are shot, we’ll tell you that and repair the flashings. If the deck is gone, we’ll say that too. Repair or replace, we’ll tell you which one actually makes sense.

Common CertainTeed Roofing Problems We Solve in Venice
Here’s what we find on CertainTeed roofs here, and why each problem is worse in Venice than a few miles inland.
- Corroded drip edge and vent boots near the beach. Venice’s salt air is aerosolized and constant. Within a few blocks of the ocean, standard galvanized drip edge and vent boots rust through in a fraction of their inland lifespan. The shingles still look fine from the street, but water gets under them at the eave and around the penetrations.
- Granule loss and exposed mat on ocean-exposed slopes. On south- and west-facing CertainTeed Landmark roofs, wind-driven sand scour plus UV degradation strips granules from the weather side years ahead of the shaded planes. You’ll see bald spots and exposed fiberglass mat on the ocean side while the north slope looks nearly new.
- Failed valley and step flashing at bungalow transitions. Venice has a lot of early-1900s bungalows from the original Abbot Kinney tract, many with odd roof transitions and shallow pitches. When CertainTeed shingles are tied into those older transitions with tired flashing, wind-driven rain backs up under the field. We see this most often on canal-adjacent and walk-street bungalows.
- Blow-off and creasing at rakes and ridges. The onshore breeze in Venice is persistent, not gusty in a storm sense. It hits unsupported eaves and low-slope-to-steep tie-ins with steady pressure, and over years that creases CertainTeed architectural shingles at the rakes and ridges, loosening the seal strips along the windward edges.
- Salt-crusted fasteners causing localized shingle lift. Nails that hold CertainTeed shingles in place corrode faster in Venice than inland. When a nail head fails, the shingle lifts at that point, and the onshore wind works the corner until a small flap opens. It leaks slowly, and by the time it shows on the ceiling, the damage around the fastener is usually bigger than the nail itself.
CertainTeed Service in Venice: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Roof
Venice’s walk streets and canal-adjacent blocks were laid out in the original 1905 Abbot Kinney tract, and many of those lots have no vehicle access at all – not a narrow driveway, but literally no way to get a truck to the property. On those jobs, the CertainTeed shingle choice matters far less than the logistics. Tear-off debris and new bundles get hand-carried down a pedestrian walk, sometimes a block or more, because there’s no staging area within reach. That’s the schedule driver on a canal bungalow, not the shingle.
We learned this the hard way, and now we plan for it. On a canal-adjacent bungalow off Dell Avenue in the walk-street grid, our crew answered a leak call on a CertainTeed Landmark roof that looked solid from the street. The actual failure was rusted-through galvanized vent boots and a pitted drip edge, with salt crusting visible along the eave. We replaced the boots and drip edge in coated steel, re-set the surrounding Landmark courses, and the leak stopped without touching the sound field shingles. We hand-carried the materials in down the walk because there’s no driveway within a block. That’s what walk-street CertainTeed work in Venice actually looks like.
CertainTeed Models & Products We Service in Venice
We install and repair the CertainTeed lines that make sense on Venice’s housing stock: Landmark architectural shingles for the beach bungalows and remodels, Presidential Shake and Presidential T/L where a heavier profile is wanted, Grand Manor and Carriage House for the luxury rebuilds, and Flintlastic modified bitumen on the original low-slope and shallow-pitch bungalow roofs. The older Abbot Kinney cottages often have shallow pitches where architectural shingles aren’t the right call, and Flintlastic handles those.
On the parts side, we use CertainTeed-manufactured accessories – starter, hip and ridge, and their flashing details – where the assembly depends on matching the field shingle. For drip edge and vent boots, we use coated steel or copper, because standard galvanized hardware does not survive Venice’s salt air. We stock common CertainTeed accessory components locally for faster turnaround on Venice jobs, and anything we don’t stock we order from our Westside suppliers with short lead times.

FAQs – CertainTeed Roofing in Venice
My CertainTeed Landmark roof near the Venice canals is only about 12 years old – why is it leaking already?
It’s almost certainly not the shingles. In Venice, the salt air and onshore wind attack the flashings, vent boots, drip edge, and fasteners first. A 12-year-old Landmark field shingle typically has plenty of life left, but galvanized hardware near the canals can rust through in under a decade. We’d inspect the hardware before touching the shingle field. If the boots and flashings are gone and the shingles are sound, the repair is surgical and far cheaper than a re-roof. Call (833) 467-4901 and we’ll take a look.
On a Venice walk-street bungalow, how do you get CertainTeed shingles and tear-off debris to the roof with no driveway?
We hand-carry everything. On the walk streets off Dell Avenue and the canal-adjacent blocks, there’s often no vehicle access within a block or more. The crew stages materials at the nearest legal parking point and carries bundles in, tears off by hand, and carries debris back out. It’s slower and more labor-intensive than a standard driveway job, which is why walk-street access shows up as a line item on the quote. It’s not a problem we work around, it’s the logistics of the neighborhood, and we plan the schedule accordingly.
Can I get a CertainTeed architectural shingle that fits Venice’s coastal look without a heavy, tall profile?
Yes. CertainTeed Landmark is an architectural shingle with a dimensional look, but it’s not nearly as heavy or tall as Presidential Shake or Grand Manor. For a Venice beach bungalow where the original roof had a low, quiet profile, Landmark gives the dimensional appearance without overwhelming the structure or making the roof look top-heavy. We’ll show you samples on-site and match the profile to the house, not the other way around.
What should I check first on a CertainTeed roof a few blocks from the beach?
Check the flashings and hardware, not the shingles. Walk around and look for rust streaks on the drip edge, pitted or crusted vent boots, and any shingle lifting at the rake or ridge. In Venice, the salt air skips the shingle field and goes straight for the metal. “Tell me what the roof is doing, and I’ll tell you what it actually needs.” If you see rust or lift, call (833) 467-4901 before it becomes a leak.
Does the salt air actually shorten the life of CertainTeed shingles themselves in Venice?
Not directly, but it shortens the life of the roof assembly. CertainTeed shingles are made for coastal exposure and hold up well to salt air on the shingle field itself. What fails earlier here is everything metal around them – drip edge, vent boots, nails, and flashing. Those failures let water into the assembly even when the shingles have plenty of years left. So the salt air does shorten the practical life of the roof as a system, unless the hardware is checked and replaced proactively. A hardware-focused inspection every few years is the smart play near the canals.
